WOAH! Shocking Cinema
Special shocking moments in Cinema
Justin and I love a good shocking moment in film and television. You know the feeling: you're completely committed to the narrative, locked in on the edge of your seat, deeply invested in the story. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, you're hit with a horrifying twist that leaves you stunned. Those are the moments I live for and find enchanting.

Spoilers for Signs ahead.
Why do we love these moments so much?
For me, the shocking scenes in Signs work because they're so sudden and so terrifying. The film sets up this close-knit farmhouse family that already feels vulnerable. They're characters you care about, which makes every horrifying twist hit that much harder.
Pair that emotional investment with the sharp, nerve-wracking score and the unforgettable image of an alien lurking in the darkness, and you've got movie magic. Bo’s innocent voice softens you before a sinister startling jump scare.
There’s a number of startling scenes in Signs, the dark fields, the horrific and nervous music, the lurking and scuttling dangerous creatures. One of my favorite examples comes later in the basement scene. The boy stands there, and suddenly the audience is alerted to the alien's presence. It was there the whole time, hiding in plain sight. The reveal lands because we're caught completely off guard, and that surprise makes the payoff even bigger.
I love to gasp. Tell me something scandalous? And juicy?
I was often told growing up that I had a flair for the dramatic.
I love big, juicy, scandalous drama. I love messy.
But I don't really enjoy reality TV, and Justin and I don't enjoy personal drama in our own lives.
So where am I supposed to get my sensational fix?
The answer, of course, is from screenwriters and authors.
Consider me a greedy little goose.
Hungrily collecting every shocking twist and jaw-dropping reveal they have to offer me. Give me that.
Better their fictional drama than yours, right?
