Horror-Fi

I’ve turned November into sci-fi month in my house. And as we wrap up watching horror movies for Halloween, I’d like to talk about my all time favorite dual genre mix: Horror + Science Fiction!

A science experiment gone wrong creating nightmares beyond understanding? Alright, I’m listening.

An extraterrestrial lifeform replacing everyone you know and love? Awesome.

A black hole that might contain your shadow self? Now we’re talking.

Give me cosmic body horror. Give me scientists making deeply questionable decisions in the name of discovery. Give me bubbling flesh, exploding crew members, mysterious gases, parasitic organisms, and inexplicable alien ooze. Give me horrors so incomprehensible, so devastatingly shocking, and so mind-alteringly bizarre that I begin to question reality itself.

What makes Horror-Fi so delicious is that underneath all the exploding bodies and impossible monsters, it's often wrestling with very human fears.

Isolation and loneliness.

The terror of the unknown. The terror of the known.

Curiosity pushing us beyond our limits.

Space itself is a void of unease. Stars and planets drift through an endless abyss, suspended in a universe that seems to be holding its breath. There is no comfort in that silence. Only the quiet horror of infinite darkness, and the unsettling realization that we are small, fragile things.

And the heroes of these stories might be the bravest characters in cinema. Not because they're fearless, but because they keep going - they show us who we want to be.

Ripley faces a perfect killing machine.

Sigourney Weaver in Alien

MacReady battles a shape-shifting nightmare.

Kurt Russell in The Thing

They also show us extreme examples of when things go too far, and who not to be, in a fabulous display:

Monstro Elisasue’s stunning final performance. The sizzle of the iron when she curls the lone strand. chef’s kiss.

Demi Moore in The Substance

It's a wonderfully weird dual genre where humanity's greatest strength and greatest weakness are the same thing:

Curiosity…

So, in honor of another November spent staring into the cosmic void, here's my list of favorite Horror / Science Fiction films.
