Do you know the film Backrooms was born out of a CreepyPasta-style 4chan post?

I love that the internet can birth an entire genre of horror, like some digital ghost story. And there’s something delicious about seeing those horrific ideas finally get the craft, attention, and recognition they deserve.

Do you remember how starved we used to be for a really good horror movie? This era of fabulous horror film is delightful and refreshing.

The director expressed he would like to finish the story off with a limited series - I hope it happens.

I was watching the film the other day and I’m pretty sure they used different wallpaper and I’m wrong. So here’s both versions and I need to watch the directors cut:

PRODUCTION DESIGN

There’s an architectural moment in Backrooms that I can’t stop thinking about - the camera drops floor by floor, at each level the furniture is shifting and evolving. The first floor looks normal. Then the next shifts. Then the next changes. Furniture folding and shaping - evolving, doorways opening and altering. By the time you’re several levels down, the room has evolved into something else, like it’s quietly consuming itself. It has digested itself and reorganized, then becomes something else entirely.

I’m applauding the production design team. I’m imagining all of you sawing shoes and chairs at bizarre angles, gluing carpet to objects that should never be carpeted, asking each other, “does this chair unnerve you?” I have a full‑time job, but I would happily quit to build preposterously goofy and useless furniture with any of you.

Every yellow hum of the wallpaper, every buzz from the tan carpet vibrating up the walls - the whole room feels alive. And the music? The sound design exhibits that exact frequency of unease, wrapping everything in this soft, wrong warmth - that makes your skin crawl.

The concept of Backrooms started as a YouTube series.

After one ill‑advised night falling down the liminal‑space rabbit hole, I learned I do not enjoy heights, falling from heights, dark waters, giant creatures, or - most importantly - falling from high places into dark water with massive creatures and eyeballs lurking beneath/above me. Horrifying. Absolutely not.

THE Creature in backrooms

The moment the monster sinks its teeth into Clark, my brain immediately jumped to Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Son. As an art‑history person, I practically levitated out of my theatre seat. It’s not just an attack - it’s consumption, pure instinctual rage and possession.

Goya painted his Black Paintings straight onto his walls while 1800s Spanish authoritarianism gnawed at his sanity - and, unfortunately, I’m relating way more than I’d prefer. As we tiptoe into our own little spiral of madness and creeping fascism, at least the art gets good.

Clark wants to let Mary go, break the loop, escape the sickness. The creature does not approve. It reacts the way Saturn does: violently, automatically, swallowing anything that threatens its control.

It’s not protecting Mary - it’s going to claim her. Because the monster doesn’t just want Mary nearby. It wants her with it. Permanently. It was devastated when she left, whining and groaning like something abandoned. It wasn’t just anger - that was heartbreak curdled into hunger.

I think she’d find it again - or it would find her - although I’m pretty sure she’s about to become part of their science experiment.

Her mom wasn’t wrong: outside is a nightmare. But isolation builds its own walls, its own creatures, its own internal struggles. Either way, the rooms remember you.
